Here’s the deal. I love Blade and Soul. A lot. Korean RPG are flipping awesome and Blade And Soul is the best.
The characters, the culture, the story… and yeah, the gameplay, I just love it all. Half the time I totally forget reality and get a little too involved with Blade And Soul.
Blade And Soul is f**king awesome. Hiroshi Takeuchi and NCSoft have created an amazing game. So I figured I would do an interview with Takeuchi to see what he’s up to.

Anyway, to prepare for the interview I’ve been playing through a ton of games like Blade And Soul. So I threw together this list of the best of them.

Games Like Blade and Soul by Genres / Themes
MMORPG: Blade and Soul is all about creating a traditional MMORPG but based around the theme of martial arts. As such there is a lot of fighting and combat that takes place in the game, including some awesome QingGong action. The game takes place in an open world environment in which you must explore the world, completing various missions assigned to you by NPCs. In many ways, it’s a fairly standard MMORPG.
PVP and PVE Combat: The combat system in Blade and Soul is real time and uses a third person perspective. You’ll be performing all sorts of combos, almost like a traditional fighting game. One of the gameplay mechanics that separate Blade and Soul from similar games is its “Downed” mechanic, which allows you to come back from near death. The game also utilises PvPvE action (player versus player versus environment).

One of the reasons for Elsword’s surge in popularity is thanks to its unique game design. The gameplay mechanics in Elsword will be familiar to MMORPG fans. They have a large emphasis on skill and when in combat you must rely on precise timing to deliver combos of hits. This creates a skills based gameplay which is far more engaging and enjoyable than the combat seen in most MMORPGs. It allows you to build your skills and to rely on your gameplay precision rather than being at the mercy of stats and figures.
Ragnarok

Ragnarok is a Korean massively multiplayer online role playing game made by video game developer GRAVITY CO. It is based on Ragnarok the manhwa by Lee Myung-jin and was originally released in 2002 for PC. The game met huge success and as a result became an anime series and a sequel called Ragnarok Online 2 : Legend of the Player. In the game you exists in a constantly changing fantasy world viewed from a top down perspective. The game’s world changes through a series of events that take place in the game’s timeline. You must interact with the 3D environment, playing as a 2D character. There are a few different types of gameplay in the gaming, including, Player vs Environment, Guild VS Guild and Player VS Player.
Mabinogi
Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, Macintosh operating systems
Mabinogi is a Korean MMORPG by video game developer devCAT studio. The game is based on Irish mythology (despite the fact that the name is taken from Welsch mythology). The game engine uses heavily stylised hand painted textures to create a unique aesthetic. The game is constantly evolving through important “Generations” and “Seasons” (updates). These bring new features like skills and pets, and new areas and also progress the storyline.
Vindictus

Vindictus is an online role playing game made by Korean video game developer devCAT and is the prequel to the popular MMORPG Mabinogi. The game takes place in the same universe as Mabinogi buthundreds of years prior to the events in Mabinogi, during a time of war. The game is free to play but there are many items available for purchase in the in-game store.
Sword Art Online
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita
Sword Art Online is a light novel series that tells a story about players trapped inside a virtual reality game where if they die in the game they will die in real life. The game based on the series has since divided audiences of two. Fans of the anime think it’s the best game of all time. Everyone else thinks it sucks.
Naruto Ultimate Ninja
PS3
Naruto Ultimate Ninja is the first games in the Ultimate Ninja series and is available for PS2. Ultimate NarutoA fighting game with a different battle system that uses special moves and many different fighting styles and techniques to create a new but somewhat familiar experience.
\Mount and Blade

Mount and Blade is a single player action RPG set in medieval times. It was developed by TaleWorlds and released in September 2006. Mount and Blade was then given a sequel called Warband in 2010. If you haven’t played Mount and Blade yet and you’re looking for a good game like X3 or a game like Eve Online, this is the perfect choice.
Archeage
Windows
Archeage was created by video game developer Jake Song, who formerly worked at game development company Lineage. Released in Korea in 2013, Archeage has recently seen a lot of popularity. It’s a “sandpark” MMORPG, which is a cross between a traditional sandbox game and RPG gameplay. Or, to put it another way, it’s Theme Park + RPG game design.
APB Reloaded
APB Reloaded is a MMOG game by video game develop Realtime Worlds, who also made Crackdown. APB Reloaded is set in a modern urban environment and pits law officers against gangs as both aim to destroy one another. One of the major differences between this and other games like APB Reloaded is that APB rewards the player for their skill, not for their time.
Zenonia
Android, iOS, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Windows Mobile, Zeebo, Bada
Zenonia is an action role playing game by Korean bideo game developer Gamevil. It has been released on PSP, DSi, iOS, Android and Windows Mobile and was first released in 2009.
In the game you play as Regret, who you control using an on screen d-pad.
